Facebook Friday: Blogging from A to Z

It was quite lucky that the “F” day for Blogging from A to Z happened on Friday! How perfect is that?
Today, I am not sharing a tutorial or how-to, but etiquette instead.
Not only is marketing and branding new to a lot of people, so is social networking.
I’m going to share some Facebook etiquette with you so that you can not only stay true to your brand, but also prevent you from having to take damage control actions. (Its always better to prevent than have to make up for it)
To me, the most important thing, in my opinion, is to think of how you would like to be marketed to. All of us have had experiences with something being shoved in our faces over and over again. Our reaction is not to buy the product so that it will go away, its annoyance. We no longer want to work with these people because they have crossed a virtual line.
Here are some tips to help you stay on the right side of that line.
- Don’t look like a marketing newbie. Stay away from spamming friends, groups, and other pages.
- Share valuable insights and tips on your page. Have conversations with fans, don’t just post links to your site/ blog over and over.
- Get to know people on Facebook before pitching to them. If you just send a general “my product/ idea is amazing” you will most likely just get ignored. Have dialog with potential sponsors, partners, and customers. When it comes time to pitch, you will be glad that you have gotten to know them.
- Interact with people using your real name- people want to know who they are working with.
- Build a relationship with your fans- this is the most valuable asset a company can have.
- Keep your personal stuff on your own stream. Sometimes it may crossover, but don’t post things that are for friends and family on your fan page. However, it is proper etiquette to post business stuff on your personal page.
Remember that Facebook, more so than Twitter and other social networks, is extremely personal.
It is where we interact with friends and family. We share photos of our families and share our major life events.
With Facebook we have to find the perfect balance of work and home life. It is difficult, but can be done if we think about how we personally react to marketing techniques.
